The local Police Chief, Ochumelov, dressed in a new overcoat and with a bundle in his hand, walks across the market square.Через базарную площадь идет полицейский надзиратель Очумелов в новой шинели и с узелком в руке.
A ginger haired constable paces after him, carrying a sieve piled high with confiscated gooseberries.За ним шагает рыжий городовой с решетом, доверху наполненным конфискованным крыжовником.
Silence reigns all around.Кругом тишина...
There is not a soul on the square.На площади ни души...
The opened doors of shops and taverns look out gloomily into the open air, like gaping hungry mouths. Not even a beggar is to be seen near them.Открытые двери лавок и кабаков глядят на свет божий уныло, как голодные пасти; около них нет даже нищих.
"Ah, so you're going to bite are you, you swine! " Ochumelov suddenly hears raised voices.- Так ты кусаться, окаянный? - слышит вдруг Очумелов.
"Hey lads, don't let her go.- Ребята, не пущай ее!
Biting is against the law, it is, it is!Нынче не велено кусаться!

A dog squeals.Слышен собачий визг.
Ochumelov turns to one side and sees a dog emerging from the woodyard of the merchant Pichugin, its head turned back as it leaps on three legs.Очумелов глядит в сторону и видит: из дровяного склада купца Пичугина, прыгая на трех ногах и оглядываясь, бежит собака.
Behind it a man dressed in a starched cotton overshirt and unbuttoned waistcoat.За ней гонится человек в ситцевой накрахмаленной рубахе и расстегнутой жилетке.
He is chasing the dog, and with his body thrust forward falls on the ground as he grabs it by its hind leg.Он бежит за ней и, подавшись туловищем вперед, падает на землю и хватает собаку за задние лапы.
Again the squeal of the dog and then the cryСлышен вторично собачий визг и крик:
"Grab her! "."Не пущай!"
Sleepy faces appear from the shops and soon a crowd, which appears to have grown from the earth, gathers around the yard.Из лавок высовываются сонные физиономии, и скоро около дровяного склада, словно из земли выросши, собирается толпа.
"Seems like some sort of commotion, yer honour! " say the constable.- Никак беспорядок, ваше благородие!.. - говорит городовой.
Ochumelov makes a half turn to the left and heads for the gathering.Очумелов делает полуоборот налево и шагает к сборищу.
By the gate of the yard, he observes, stands the afore-mentioned man in the unbuttoned waistcoat, who, holding his right hand aloft, shows to the crowd a bloodied finger.Около самых ворот склада, видит он, стоит вышеписанный человек в расстегнутой жилетке и, подняв вверх правую руку, показывает толпе окровавленный палец.
On his half-drunk face one may read, almost as if it was imprinted there,На полупьяном лице его как бы написано:
"You wait, I'll get you, you villain! " and even the finger itself has the appearance of a battle ensign."Ужо я сорву с тебя, шельма!", да и самый палец имеет вид знамения победы.
Ochumelov recognises the man as the goldsmith Khryukin.В этом человеке Очумелов узнает золотых дел мастера Хрюкина.
In the centre of the crowd, its hind legs spread out and its whole body shaking, sits, on the ground, the villain of the piece - a white borzoi puppy with a sharp muzzle and a dark patch on its back.В центре толпы, растопырив передние ноги и дрожа всем телом, сидит на земле сам виновник скандала - белый борзой щенок с острой мордой и желтым пятном на спине.
In its tear stained eyes an expression of anguish and terror.В слезящихся глазах его выражение тоски и ужаса.
"Hello, hello, what's up here then? " asks Ochumelov as he forces his way into the crowd.- По какому это случаю тут? - спрашивает Очумелов, врезываясь в толпу.
"What's all this abaht then?- Почему тут?
What's the meaning of this finger?Это ты зачем палец?..
Who was doin' the shoutin'? "Кто кричал!
"I was goin' my way peacably, yer honour" -Khryukin starts up, coughing into his sleeve,- "me 'n Mitriy Mitriychem here, about some firewood, when suddenly this animal, without no provocation, is on my finger.- Иду я, ваше благородие, никого не трогаю... -начинает Хрюкин, кашляя в кулак. - Насчет дров с Митрий Митричем, - и вдруг эта подлая ни с того ни с сего за палец...
You understand, sir, I'm a workin' man.Вы меня извините, я человек, который работающий...
My work is menial like.Работа у меня мелкая.

"I'll see to you yet, don't you worry!" Ochumelov threatens him, and wrapping himself in his overcoat, he continues on his way across the market square.- Я еще доберусь до тебя! - грозит ему Очумелов и, запахиваясь в шинель, продолжает свой путь по базарной площади.
